When thinking about pearl jewellery the older generation will come to mind for some, others will say that pearls have always been in fashion, but one thing for sure is that pearl jewellery has come a long way since your grandmother’s pearls! Modern day pearl jewellery not only incorporates the classic elegance of times gone by, but has also evolved with added bling and style for the 21st Century.

The pearl is an earthy gem, treasured for its purity, lustre, elegance and is a noted symbol of classic beauty. Pearls occur naturally, but can also farmed (cultured). They are available in a range of colours, shapes and sizes.

For those who are new to pearls and those who appreciate there beauty, here are a few basics!

Pearl Varieties

Pearls come in a variety of styles and colours:

South Sea pearls are found in areas off China and Japan. South Sea pearls can be white, silver, pink, gold, and cream and are the largest and rarest of the cultured pearl which also makes them the most valuable.

• The Tahitian pearl (or black pearl) is formed from the black lip oyster and derives its name from the fact they are primarily found in French Polynesia around Tahiti.

Akoya pearls are produced by the Japanese Akoya oyster and are usually white in appearance, but can also be a pink, silver or cream. Akoya pearls are also now commonly farmed in China.

Freshwater pearls are pearls that are created using freshwater mussels.

Pearl grading system

When selecting pearls, you should make use of the pearl grading system to help you with your decision:

Orient – Inner glow and luminous iridescence of the pearls surface
Size – Size grown in oyster
Shape – round, pear, tear and oval shape, the more symmetrical the more valuable.
Surface perfection – blemishes are a part of a pearls authenticity, the less blemishes the more valuable.
Rarity – matching orient, shape, size and colour is a meticulous exercise.
